Pulau Duyung, literally called the mermaid island is a delta or river mouth island located in the middle of Kuala Terengganu. It is known for its traditional boatbuilding and handicraft like songket.

The uniqueness of traditional boat making is the reversed process of the modern boat making across the whole world. While the conventional way is to build the bone first followed by everything else, they make the outer layer first without using a measuring tape and mostly measured by eye bulling.

Cristoph Swoboda, a German owner of Naga Pelangi, claimed that the traditional engineering of the boat is the best of the world and he had no worry when the boat come into storm or waves as he was convinced of its durability.
