Ever watch mermaids or sea people in fantasies movies where they can stay underwater for a long time? No need to go far, just located between Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines, there lies a sea where typhoons and storms frequently happened. It is the hometown of ethnic Bajau whom spend most of their lives on sea.

They make their living based on the sea like fishing and finding oysters. Their lungs and spleen also found out to be slightly bigger than us 'Mainlands'. This evolution is useful to adapt with their lifestyle where they spent almost 3/4 of their lives swimming and diving.

The children were taught to swim and dive at the early age since it was necessary for their survival. While some of the Bajau people make their house near shallow water, some still live on the boat as their primary house.

It is very heart-warming to see the children being one with nature compare with our millennial kids stuck up to their tablets and gadgets. Being unbound by such things like nationality, they do trades with nearby towns like Sandakan in Malaysia, Sulu Archipelago in Philippines, and Makassar in Indonesia.

Being in contact with Muslims traders for so long, most of them embrace Islam as their religion and marry according to Muslim guideline. However, many of them still practice the animism where sometimes contradict to Islamic teaching. Not forget to mention that most of them in Visaya adopted Christianity as their religion.
